ICT and Digital Lifestyle (ICTDL) Compulsory For Students In RSUS

ICT and Digital Lifestyle (ICTDL)
Compulsory For Students In RSUST

The leadership and authority of the Rivers State
University of Science and Technology (RSUST) has
made it mandatory for students of the academic
institution to undergo the ICT Competence and
Digital Lifestyle training course.

The decision by the academic institution leadership
was based on the need for students to be able to
appreciate the use of computers since the university
runs a full online system.

The course is now compulsory for students in their
first and second year of the Rivers State University of
Science and Technology (RSUST).

Already, the RSUST IT Academy has put modalities in
place to commence the training classes for the
students as online registration begins.
Good move by the authorities of the RSUST.

It is also the second of such institution in the country,
the first being Tai Solarin University of Education,
Ikene in Ogun State.
While speaking during the inauguration of the
projects ahead of the commencement of the new
university, the State governor, governor Aliyu also
named the Provost of the College of Education,
Professor Umar Abdulrasheed, as the pioneer Vice
Chancellor of the University of Education.
Likewise, the Chairman, Governing Board of the
College, Prof. Mohammed Daniyan, is also named by
the state governor, to be the Chancellor of the
proposed university.
The governor also went on to add that their
appointments were based on the records of
distinctive performance by the two officers which led
to the transformation of the citadel to an institution
being sought after by students from across Nigeria.
Among the projects inaugurated by Governor Aliyu
which were executed from the Tertiary Education
Trust Fund (TETFUND) and as well, Internally
Generated Fund (IGR) included, the N500 million
Introductory Technology Centre (ITC).
Other projects commissioned by the Governor are
the Centre for Educational Technology (CET), 1, 000
sitting capacity lecture theatre and as well as the
construction and equipment of a Micro Finance Bank
and a campus FM Radio station.
The governor also went on to disclose that the Niger
State government has also paid for resource
inspection of facilities as provided for the immediate
take-off of the university in September, 2014 as a
pre-condition for the National Universities
Commission’s approval.
We hope everything goes right and academic
activities commence in September as scheduled.

Currently on Going: Students Protesting In TASUED over Increament in Fees

Currently on Going: Students
Protesting In TASUED over
Increament in Fees
This is not a joke anymore, why does it seems like
almost all the tertiary institutions in Nigeria are
increasing their school fee?
Latest report reaching us today, is that the students
of the Tai SOlarin University of Education (Tasued)
are destroying the school properties over increment
in school fees.
However, at first, the students were peacefully
protesting against the hike in school fee, but after
the school hindered them from writing exams, this
angered the students which sadly, lead to the
destruction of School Properties!
This protest was led by TASUED (Tai Solarin
University Of Education) SUG President, Ekeyokpa
Sunday Osas yesterday 10th of June 2014, a protest
which was as a result of increase in school fees and
hindrance from attempting exams. More than half
the school were not allowed to write exams which
commenced on Monday 9th of June 2014, and after
reading but not writing the exams, the students
decide to write on the school properties by breaking
and scattering them.
The school security who tried to prevent the students
from making more damages, shot one of the
students in the waist.
We can also confirmed that the Student Union
Government (SUG) President sustained injury on the
head and leg, while his general secretary got injured
on the left hand.

Several other students sustained injuries during the
protest which are serious too.
However, when OP MESA were invited into the
matter, they were able to scare the students away
using tear gas and multiple gunshots which was
carefully shot in the air to avoid injuring any of the
students.
We are also able to confirm that six (6) other
Students were arrested by the School security, most
of which were arrested randomly and were also
beaten thoroughly.

The 6 students after been beaten, were handed to
the Igbeba Police Department but were later released
yesterday night

ASUP Strike 2014: ASUP Union Holds Crucial Meeting On Thursday, 12th June, 2014
Well, what else are we expecting if not the best?
According to latest news reaching our news desk
today, the national executives of the Academic Staff
Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, have scheduled an all-
important meeting on Thursday, the 12th of June,
2014, where the union will be sitting down to review
the ongoing strike and negotiations between the
union and the Federal Government.
Like most of us are already aware of, the Academic
staff union of Polytechnics, (ASUP) has been on strike
since the 4th of October 2013.
The union’s demand includes the following listed
below:
1. The need for the constitution of the Governing
Councils of Federal Polytechnics,
2. The migration of the lower cadres on the CONTISS 15
salary scale,
3. The release of the White Paper on the Visitations to
Federal Polytechnics,
4. The need for the commencement of the Needs
Assessment of Nigerian Polytechnics.
Faith, a Dailyschoolnews Nigeria correspondent, was
able to gather that recent negotiations have been
positive between the leadership of ASUP and the
federal government, and Thursday’s meeting would
enable the union’s negotiating team to brief its
executives, which means that if all goes well, the
Union will consider the federal government offer and
call of the 2014 asup strike legally.
According to a source among the ASUP management
board, disclosed that as he is not permitted to speak
on the matter, therefore plead anonymity, and said
that the meeting, which will hold in Abuja, will not
call off the strike, but would review the negotiations
between the two bodies.
The anonymous source, however, said the strike
would be called off very soon, as the negotiations
were more progressive as never before.
However, when we contacted the ASUP National
Publicity secretary, Clement Chirman, he also
confirmed the meeting, and here’s his exact words
which we decide to quote.
“We are meeting to appraise the level of negotiation
and to also decide on the next line of action,” he said.
The intervention of the House of Representatives in
the strike appears to have influenced the seeming
progress in negotiations.
A meeting was held at the National Assembly on May
27 between lecturers and the government delegation
led by the Education Minister, Nyesom Wike. The
meeting was facilitated by the House Committee on
Education.
At the meeting, Mr. Wike told attendees that the
major contention of the workers, which is their salary
arrears, was not being addressed because a
government agency had raised concerns.
He said the Salaries, Wages and Income Commission
was opposed to the payment of arrears owed the
lecturers, saying it was not consulted before the
2009 CONTISSS agreement between the lecturers
and the federal government was reached
